PRIZE WINNING PHOTO TAKEN ON THIS DAY

POW Col. Robert L. Stirm is reunited with his family at Travis Air Force Base in California.

On March 17, 1973, Associated Press photographer Slava
“Sal” Veder captured a heartwarming scene on the tarmac
of California’sTravis Air Force Base as a recently freed
American prisoner of war runs  toward his family.

The jubilation of the moment is encapsulated in the central
image of his teenaged daughter, whose wide smile and
outstretched arms express her unbridled exuberance over
her father’s return from Vietnam.

The photo depicting Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm and his family,
called “Burst of Joy,” goes on to win a Pulitzer Prize in 1974.

Stirm was among 20 POWs from prison camps in North
Vietnam aboard the plane that landed at Travis AFB,
where a large crowd of family members turned up to
welcome their loved ones home.

Stirm, an Air Force fighter pilot shot down over Hanoi in
1967, had spent more than five years as a prisoner of the
Vietnam War.

“Burst of Joy” has appeared in numerous books and
exhibits and symbolizes for many the end of the divisive
Vietnam War—which claimed some 58,000 American lives
and the dawn of new life after a dark period.

LEBANON, Ore. (KATU) — On Feb. 6, 2025, a group of Safeway employees in Lebanon demonstrated heroism when a co-worker
suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the store’s break room.

Mary Stratton, John Escalera, Brandy Davis, and Tammy Vanepps-
Fox acted in time, performing CPR and using an Automated
External Defibrillator to administer two shocks before emergency responders arrived.

Their prompt actions were crucial in giving the patient a fighting
chance at survival.

Upon arrival, Lebanon Fire District crews continued treatment,
applying two additional shocks and achieving Return of
Spontaneous Circulation before stabilizing the patient was
transported to the hospital and discharged several days later.

The lifesaving efforts of Stratton, Escalera, Davis, and Vanepps-
Fox were recognized at the Lebanon Fire District’s Board Meeting
on March 11, 2025.

LFD also expressed gratitude to its crew members for their
professional response.

Lee Petty Wins the 1959 Daytona 500 by One Yard

On February 22, 1959, Lee Petty defeated Johnny Beauchamp
in a
photo finish at the just-opened Daytona International
Speedway in
Florida to win the first-ever Daytona 500.

The race was so close that Beauchamp was initially named the
winner by William France, the owner of the track and head of
the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.

However, Petty, who was driving a hardtop Oldsmobile 88,
challenged the results and three days later, with the assistance
of news photographs, he was officially named the champ.

Petty’s son, Richard (1937- ) became one of the greatest drivers
in NASCAR history, winning the Daytona 500 a record seven
times between 1964 and 1981.
