SINGER PAT BOONE IS 81 TODAY

 

 

Charles Eugene "Pat" Boone was born in Jacksonville, Florida.

Singer, actor, and writer Pat Boone was a successful pop singer during
the 1950s and early 1960s. He sold over 45 million albums, had 38 Top
40 hits and appeared in more than 12 Hollywood movies.

According to Billboard, Boone was the second biggest charting artist of
the late 1950s, behind only Elvis Presley. He attended three colleges
before graduating.



"Moody River" is a number-one Billboard Hot 100 song from June
of 1961.

CLASSIC RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1957

The 1957 Buddy Holly recording of “That’ll Be The Day” was certified gold – for
over a million sales in 1969 by the RIAA. The the single was inducted into the 
Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

In 2005, the 1957 recording was placed in the National Recording Registry, a
list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important,
and/or inform or reflect life in the United States."



“That’ll Be The Day” became a number-one hit on the
1957 "Best
Sellers in Stores"
chart in Billboard magazine.

Wayne’s frequently-used, catchphrase, "that’ll be the day" from this 1956 movie inspired the young musicians in writing the song.

NUMBER-ONE SINGLE ON THIS DAY IN 1965

"Ticket to Ride" was used in the 1965 film Help!, The Beatles’ second film, and
was included on the film’s soundtrack. In 2004, this song was ranked number
394 on Rolling Stone‍ ‘​s list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

NUMBER-ONE SINGLE ON THIS DAY IN 1980

"Call Me" by Blondie was number one for six weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart,
where it became the band’s biggest single and second #1 hit. Blondie is a rock
band founded by singer Debbie Harry (below) and guitarist Chris Stein.
