RECORD RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1959

The instrumental song "Sleep Walk" was written and recorded by brothers Santo &
Johnny
Farina, with their uncle Mike Dee playing the drums. It was recorded at
Trinity Music in Manhattan, New York City. The single entered Billboard‘s Top
40
on August 17, 1959 and rose to the number 1 position for the last two weeks
in September and remained in the Top 40 until November 9. It also reached
number 4 on the R&B chart and was the last instrumental to hit number one in
the 1950s and earned Santo & Johnny a gold record.

NUMBER ONE ON THIS DAY IN 1958

The novelty song "The Purple People Eater" was written and performed
by
Sheb Wooley, which reached no. 1 on the Billboard pop charts in 1958
from June 9 to July 14.

According to Wooley, MGM Records initially rejected the song, saying
that it was not the type of music with which they wanted to be identified.

RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1965

Upon it’s release, "Satisfaction" was a hit, giving the Stones
their first number one in the US. In 2004, Rolling Stone
magazine placed the song in the second spot on its list of
"The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". It was added to the
National Recording Registry
of the Library of Congress in
2006.

SINGLE RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1964

Beach Boys - I Get Around.jpg

The song "I Get Around" was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for
the rock band the Beach Boys and was released as a single in May 1964
with "Don’t Worry Baby" as its B-side. It became the group’s first number- 
one charting song in the United States. In 2016, the song was inducted
into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The song "Ain’t That a Shame"
was written by Fats Domino and Dave
Bartholomew
.  released by Imperial Records. I became a hit, eventually
selling a million copies. It reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart
and number 10 on the pop chart. The song is ranked number 438 on
Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
