hits with Motown before signing with Buddah Records. The song
won a Grammy Award before signing with Buddah Records. The
song won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo
or Group with Vocal.
MOST POPULAR SONG ON THIS DAY IN 1955
"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" was the most popular song in the United States
during this time in 1955, according to a report by Billboard magazine. The
publication stated that if the sales of all versions of the song were all added
up, more than 18 million copies were sold within six months.
The first recording of the song was made by Bill Hayes, quickly followed with
versions by Fess Parker and Tennessee Ernie Ford, a bluegrass single by
Mac Wiseman and a contemporary version exists of the western singing
group the Sons of the Pioneers.
The song, sung by The Wellingtons, was introduced on the television miniseries
Davy Crockett, first telecast on December 15, 1954, on ABC‘s Disneyland. Fess
Parker played the role of Davy Crockett.

SOLO ALBUM DEBUT ON THIS DAY IN 1970
McCartney, the debut solo album by Paul McCartney, started a three-week
run at the top of the Billboard Hot 200 on May 23, 1970. Apart from Linda
McCartney‘s vocal contributions, McCartney performed and recorded the
entire album solo which features loosely arranged and, in some cases,
unfinished home recordings.The album was reissued in June 2011 as
part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection.
