NUMBER ONE ON THIS DATE IN 1950
"Mona Lisa" was written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the
Paramount Pictures film Captain Carey,U.S.A. (1950). The song won
the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 1950.The arrangement
was by Nelson Riddle with Les Baxter and his Orchestra. Nat King
Cole’s soundtrack version spent eight weeks at number on the
Billboard singles chart. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of
Fame in 1992.
ERIC CLAPTON RELEASE WAS ON THIS DATE IN 1974
“I Shot The Sheriff” was first released by The Wailers on their album Burnin’
in 1973. Eric Clapton’s cover version is the most successful version of the
song, peaking at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 14,1974. It
became his only #1 song in the United States.
PAUL ANKA WITH THE #1 SONG ON THIS DATE IN 1959
Although Paul Anka had earlier topped Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart in 1957
with "Diana”, “Lonely Boy” became Anka’s first song to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
