‘’KID CRITICS’’ ON KOIN RADIO ~ 970

KOIN, originally aired as KQP on November 9, 1925. The call letters were 
later changed to KOIN on April 12, 1926. It became an affiliate of CBS, the
Columbia Broadcasting System, on September 1, 1929. During the golden 
years of radio, KOIN was one of Portland’s major stations, with many local 
programs and its own studio orchestra.

Robert James "Bob" Keeshan (June 27, 1927 – January 23, 2004)

Bob Keeshan is considered a pioneer in the formation of children’s
television programs. He played the title character of the iconic show
Captain Kangaroo during its 30-year run (1955-1984). Keeshan also
played the original “Clarabell the Clown” on the Howdy Doody show
from its debut in 1948 on NBC until he left in 1952.

RADIO SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1947

The Lassie radio show was broadcast from 1947-1950. It first aired on
ABC, then on NBC. Lassie played a different dog each week in different
kinds of situations. The shows were 15 minutes and were sponsored by
Red Heart dog food and treat company.

Gerald Patrick "Jerry" Mathers

Mathers is best remembered for his classic role as a child on the CBS/ABC 
television show, Leave It To Beaver from 1957-1963. He made a PET milk
commercial at the age of 2 and was also a model for a department store ad.

Jerry Mathers later became a successful banker and real estate investor
and reentered the entertainment industry in 1978.
