FROM MOTHER’S DAY IN 1947
"Shopping for Mother’s Day," Saturday
MAGAZINE WAS LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1974

On March 4, 1974, actress Mia Farrow from The Great Gatsby
graced the cover of the inaugural issue of People, a weekly
celebrity and human interest magazine spotlighting the
personal lives of notable and intriguing people. People
remains one of America’s best-selling weeklies.
The magazine has earned respect for its refusal, unlike
tabloids, to publish unsubstantiated rumors.

POPULAR MAGAZINE FIRST PUBLISHED
On December 17, 1892, Arthur Baldwin Turnure first published
a new magazine, dedicated to “the ceremonial side of life”
and targeted at “the sage as well as the debutante, men of
affairs as well as the belle.”
As a product of the Gilded Age, Vogue has chronicled and
influenced high society, fashion and culture ever since.
Publisher Condé Nast purchased Vogue in 1905, changing it
to focus almost entirely on women and fashion and creating
the first of its international editions (there are now over 20).
The magazine has remained popular and relevant ever since,
regularly featuring the work of world-famous models, writers
and photographers.

THE POST ON THIS DAY IN 1964

The Saturday Evening Post was first published in 1821 in the
same printing shop at 53 Market Street in Philadelphia, where
the Benjamin Franklin-founded Pennsylvania Gazette was
published in the 18th century.
While the Gazette ceased publication in 1800, ten years after
Franklin’s death, the Post links its history to the original
magazine.
