Linda Lavin Dead: 'Alice' Star, Tony-Winning Broadway Actor Was 87

NEW YORK (AP — Linda Lavin, a Tony Award-winning stage
actress who became a working class icon as a paper-hat
wearing waitress on the CBS – TV sitcom "Alice," has died.

Her representative, Bill Veloric, said Lavin died in Los
Angeles on Sunday of complications from recently
discovered lung cancer.

On December 29, 1890, in one of the final chapters of America’s
long Indian wars
, the U.S. Cavalry killed 146 Lakota Indians at
Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.

The conflict at Wounded Knee was originally referred to as a
battle, but in reality it was a tragic and avoidable massacre.
