WORLD TRADE CENTER OPENED ON THIS DAY

Statue of Liberty with Manhattan skyline

The “Twin Towers” of the World Trade Center officially opened in
New York City
after years of delays. The buildings replaced the
Empire State Building as the world’s tallest building. Though they
would only hold that title for a year, they remained a dominant
feature of the city’s skyline and
were recognizable the world over
long before they
were
destroyed in a terrorist attack
in 2001.

DEBUT OF THE PONY EXPRESS IN 1860

undefined

On April 3, 1860, the first Pony Express mail, traveling by horse
and rider relay teams, simultaneously left St. Joseph,
Missouri,
and Sacramento,
California. Ten days later, on April 13, the
westbound rider and mail packet completed the approximately
1,800-mile journey and arrived in Sacramento, beating the
eastbound packet’s arrival in St. Joseph by two days and setting
a new standard for speedy mail delivery.

Although ultimately short-lived and unprofitable, the Pony Express captivated America’s imagination and helped win federal aid for a
more economical overland postal system. It also contributed to the economy of the towns on its route and served the mail-service
needs of the American West in the days before the telegraph or
an efficient transcontinental railroad.

K-9 CORPS LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1942

Today Is K9 Veterans Day - The 'US Army K9 Corps' Began In 1942 - South Florida Reporter

On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) of the United
States Army began training dogs for the newly established War
Dog Program, or “
K-9 Corps.

Well over a million dogs served on both sides during World War
I
, carrying messages along the complex network of trenches and providing some measure of psychological comfort to the soldiers.

The most famous dog to emerge from the war was Rin Tin Tin, an abandoned puppy of German war dogs found in France in 1918
and taken to the United States, where he made his film debut in
the 1922 silent film The Man from Hell’s River. As the first bona
fide animal movie star, Rin Tin Tin made the little-known German Shepherd breed famous across the country.
