GAME SHOW CELEBRATES FIFTY YEARS TODAY

The television game show Jeopardy!, created by Merv Griffin, originally aired in the
daytime on NBC from March 30, 1964 to January 30, 1975. The quiz show became
a weekly nighttime syndicated edition airing from September 9, 1974 to September
5, 1975. Art Fleming was the original host. Various versions of the show have since
followed with Alex Trebek as the present host.

THEM BONES, THEM CHICKEN BONES

 

A Ganong Bros. Candy maker, Frank Sparhawk, invented the “Chicken bone."
candy in 1885. The confection was in fact Ganong’s first signature candy for
Canada’s oldest candy company, located in the small town of St. Stephen in
Southern New Brunswick.

John Ernest "Johnny" Crawford

Before becoming widely known for his role as Mark McCain on the long-
running ABC western series, The Rifleman (1958-1963), he free-lanced
for several years, accumulating over 60 TV credits. At age nine,Crawford
first performed before a national audience as one of the original members
of the Musketeer’s on The Mickey Mouse Club (1955-1959).

A FIRST FOR ELVIS ON THIS DAY IN 1958

Elvis Presley’s ducktail hairstyle and famous sideburns were removed
as he received his first regulation short haircut from US Army barber
James Peterson. A clump of Elvis’ hair went up for bid in March, 2010 
at a Chicago auction house, selling for $15,000.

The former Army building at Fort Chaffee, Ark., where Elvis got  the
haircut, could be designated as an historical landmark.

A RADIO FIRST ON THIS DAY IN 1932

Singer and actress Belle Baker hosted a radio variety show on
WABC in New York City from a moving train in the area. It was
a first for radio broadcasting. She talked about everything from
the current weather conditions to local news from various towns.
