Alcatraz Island, located in the San Francisco Bay in California, was developed as
a military prison (1868), and a federal prison beginning in 1933.

Because the penitentiary was becoming more costly to operate than other prisons,
coupled with the salt water erosion of the buildings, Attorney General Robert F.
Kennedy ordered the facility closed. The U.S. Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois
opened as the replacement for Alcatraz.

Today, the island’s facilities are managed by the National Park Service as part of
the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours.

(March 20, 1922 – March 24, 1990)

Comedian Ray Goulding, together with Bob Elliot formed the comedy
duo of Bob and Ray whose career spanned five decades on both
radio and television. 

Goulding began his career as a news announcer on Boston radio 
station WHDH-AM. Elliot was also an announcer/DJ during that
time at the same station.

RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1958

The duo of Tom And Jerry released their first single,
"Our Song". The record failed to gain much attention,
but the pair would eventually find success recording
under their real names,
Simon and Garfunkel.

WWII. The NBC
radio series aired until June 2, 1950. It was sponsored by General Mills.
