Samuel Moore "Sam" Walton
(March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992)

Oklahoma-born Sam Walton is the founder of Walmart retail chain and
Sam’s Club. He worked at J.C. Penny in Des Moines, Iowa, training in
management. He managed his first variety store, which was part of
the Butler Brothers chain, in 1945 when he was only 26.

Carl Karcher’s fast food career started with a hot dog cart in Los
Angeles that took in $14.75 on July 17, 1941, his first day in the
business. He had been a delivery boy for a bakery based in
Anaheim. Carl and his wife Margaret had 12 children.

Carl’s Jr. hamburger chain is now owned by parent company
CKE Restaurants, Inc. It is in the top ten fast-food chains in the
United States.

Kresge was the founder of the S. S. Kresge Company, one of the
20th century’s largest retail organizations. The company was later
renamed the Kmart Corporation in 1977.
