NEW YORK (AP) — A Nigerian chess champion and child
education advocate played chess nonstop for 60 hours in
New York City’s Times Square to break the Guinness World
Record for the longest chess marathon.

Tunde Onakoya, 29, hopes to raise $1 million for children’s
education across Africa through the record attempt that
began on Wednesday.

He had set out to play the royal game for 58 hours but
continued until he reached 60 hours at about 12:40 a.m.
Saturday, surpassing the current chess marathon record
of 56 hours, 9 minutes and 37 seconds, achieved in 2018
by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad.

The Guinness World Record organization has yet to publicly
comment about Onakoya’s attempt. It sometimes takes weeks
for the organization to confirm any new record.

‘LESS COMPETITIVE’ VERSION OF THE GAME

LONDON (TND) – A new version of Scrabble is set to be released
for the first time in 75 years and the updated rendition of the
iconic board game is reportedly aimed at a Gen Z audience.

The updated version, to be released in Europe, will include two
sides, one side with the original game for players who want to
stick to the traditional version and a second, "less competitive"
version to appeal to Gen Z players,
BBC first reported.

The second side, called Scrabble Together, will include helper
cards, using a simpler scoring system that will be quicker to
play and allow people to play in teams.

Broadcaster and British Scrabble president, Gyles Brandreth,
told
BBC Radio 4 Today that Mattel, the maker of the game,
had done some research and found that younger, Gen Z people
don’t like the "competitive nature" of the game as much as older generations. In response, he said the newer version would be
"easier" and "more inclusive."

IT WAS ‘THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED’

See the source image

(Fox News) – The Baltimore Colts stunned the New York Giants
23-17 in "sudden death" at the NFL championship game at
Yankee Stadium before a mesmerized nationwide
television
audience
on this day in history, Dec. 28, 1958.

The event has gone down in American sports lore as "the
greatest game ever played."

The dramatic title tilt helped popularize pro football at a time
when it ranked behind baseball and college football — even
boxing and horse racing — in the national sporting
consciousness.
