Known as Buddy Holly, born to a musical family in
Lubbock, Texas
was a singer, songwriter and musician who was a central and
pioneering figure of mid-1950s
rock and roll

The spelling change from Holley to Holly came about because of
an error in a contract he was asked to sign, listing him as Buddy
Holly, according to the website for "The Buddy Holly Story."

As the fourth and youngest child in his family, Holly was nicknamed "Buddy" by his mother, who felt that his given name was too big
for her young boy, according to Biography.com.

founder, guitarist, second lead vocalist and principal songwriter

the Who, one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s
and 1970s.

critical acclaim. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame
as a member of the group.

On February 27, 2006, baseball pioneer Effa Manley became the
first woman elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Manley, who
died in 1981, was co-owner of the Newark (New Jersey) Eagles,
a Negro League powerhouse, and a huge advocate for Black
ballplayers and civil rights causes.

On this day in 1936, the U.S. Baseball Hall of Fame elected its first members in Cooperstown, New York: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Matthewson and Walter Johnson.

Today, with approximately 350,000 visitors per year, the Hall of
Fame continues to be the hub of all things baseball. It has elected
278 individuals, in all, including 225 players, 17 managers, 8
umpires and 28 executives and pioneers.

On January 19,  1972, 36-year-old Sandy Koufax, the former
Los Angeles Dodgers star, became the youngest player
elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. "This is the only thing
that’s made having to retire early a little easier," says Koufax,
who retired at age 30. "This is the biggest honor I’ve ever been
given, not just in baseball, but in my life."
