THE 34th PRESIDENT ON THIS DAY IN 1957
U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered a mild stroke while in the Oval
Office during his second term which disabled his ability to speak for about 24
hours. The following year Eisenhower wrote a letter of authority giving Vice
President Richard Nixon the right to assume power in the event the President
became incapacitated.
