IT’S THE SHORTEST DAY OF THE YEAR

Winter solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight during the
whole year. The word solstice comes from the Latin words for “sun
and “to stand still.”
Winter this year officially begins tonight at 11:48
P.M.
EST. After this date, the days start getting “longer,” i.e., the
amount of
daylight begins to increase.

Spring begins today at 3:45 P.M. (PST)

The first day of spring is called the vernal equinox. What does that stand
for you ask? ‘Vernal’ is Latin for spring while ‘equinox’ is Latin for ‘equal
night’. During this time the earth experiences 12 hours of daylight and
12 hours of darkness.
