FIRST MAN ON THE MOON IS 81 TODAY

Neil Alden Armstrong is a former astronaut, Navy test pilot aerospace engineer,
and university professor. He was the first person to set foot on the Moon July 21,
1969. For his spaceflights, Armstrong received the Congressional Medal of Honor.

MISSION COMPLETE ON THIS DATE IN 1964

RANGER 7 

Ranger 7 was the first U.S. space probe to successfully transmit close images
of the Moon’s surface back to Earth. It was also the first completely successful
flight of the Ranger program. It was launched on 28 July 1964 and reached the
Moon on 31 July 1964. The spacecraft carried six television vidicon cameras
that took more than 4,300 pictures on the way down to its target.

Michael Connell Biehn is best known for his roles in James Cameron’s science
fiction action films The Terminator (1984) as Kyle Reese, Aliens (1986) as Cpl.
Dwayne Hicks, and The Abyss (1989) as Lt. Coffey. He also had a role in the film Tombstone (1993). Biehn was also in the cast of the Emmy Award-winning NBC
television series Hill Street Blues which aired from 1981 to 1987.

on July 29, 1958, replacing its predecessor, the National Advisory
Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The agency became operational
on October 1, 1958.

MOON MISSION BEGAN ON THIS DATE IN 1971

Apollo 15 was the ninth manned mission in the Apollo space program. the fourth
to land on the Moon and the eighth successful manned mission. It was also the first
long duration stay on the Moon. There was a greater focus on scientific work with
the first use of a Lunar Roving Vehicle (below). Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin spent three days on the Moon and a total of 18½ hours
outside the spacecraft with the Lunar Rover. The mission concluded on August 7
and was called the most successful manned flight ever achieved.
