Sally Kristen Ride is a physicist who joined NASA in 1978 and became the 
first American woman, then the youngest at 32, to enter space. She left 
NASA in 1987 to work at Stanford University’s Center for International
Security and Arms Control. In 1989, she became a professor of physics
at the University of  California, San Diego and Director of the California
Space Institute.

FAITH 7 MISSION ON THIS DAY IN 1963

The spacecraft, named Faith 7, piloted by astronaut Gordon Cooper completed 22
Earth orbits traveling 593,885 miles in 34 hours, 20 minutes. The mission was to
determine the effects of extended spaceflight on man. The spacecraft and its 
pilot were recovered only 36 minutes after splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
