The “Twin Towers” of the World Trade Center officially opened in
New York City after years of delays. The buildings replaced the
Empire State Building as the world’s tallest building. Though they
would only hold that title for a year, they remained a dominant
feature of the city’s skyline and were recognizable the world over
long before they were destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001.

On March 15, 1968, construction started on the north tunnel of
the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel on Interstate 70 in
Colorado, some 60 miles west of Denver.
Located at an elevation of more than 11,000 feet, the project was
an engineering marvel and became the world’s highest vehicular
tunnel when it was completed in 1979. Four months after opening,
one million vehicles had passed through the tunnel; today, some
10 million vehicles drive through it each year.
On February 27, 1827, a group of masked and costumed
students danced through the streets of New Orleans,
Louisiana, marking the beginning of the city’s famous
Mardi Gras celebrations.
Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the
practice of the last night of consuming rich, fatty foods
in preparation for the fasting season of Lent.
