THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1955
The Lawrence Welk Show was a musical variety show hosted by big band
leader Lawrence Welk. It started in 1951 as a local program on KTLA-TV in
Los Angeles. The original show was broadcast from the since-demolished
Aragon Ballroom at Venice Beach.The show made its national TV debut on
July 2, 1955, and was produced at the Hollywood Palladium for 23 of its 27
years on the air. The only seasons not taped there were 1965-66, 1976-77
at the Hollywood Place and CBS Television City from 1977 to 1979.The show
aired on ABC until it was cancelled in 1971.
ELVIS ON THE STEVE ALLEN SHOW ~ THIS DATE IN 1956
Steve Allen, no fan of rock and roll, introduced a "new Elvis" in a white bow tie
and black tails. Presley sang "Hound Dog" for less than a minute to a basset
hound wearing a top hat and bow tie. Elvis later commented that the Allen
show appearance was the most ridiculous performance of his career.

“WHERE THE ACTION IS” DEBUTED ON THIS DATE 1965
Where the Action Is or (WTAI) was a music-based television variety show
on ABC that aired weekday afternoons in black and white from Tuesday,
June 27, 1965 to March 31, 1967. It was created by Dick Clark as a spin-
off of American Bandstand. The program had its own group of performers,
most notably Paul Revere & the Raiders, who served as the house band
until 1966. The show’s theme song, “Action”, became a hit single for
Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon.
ED SULLIVAN SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1948
The Ed Sullivan Show was a TV variety that originally ran on CBS from Sunday
June 20, 1948 to Sunday June 6, 1971, and was hosted by Ed Sullivan, a New
York entertainment columnist. The show was first titled Toast of the Town, but
was widely referred to as the Ed Sullivan Show for years before September 25,
1955, when that became its official name. Among the debut acts were Dean
martin and Jerry Lewis. In 2002, The Ed Sullivan Show was ranked #15 on
TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. The show originally aired
live from the Maxine Elliot Theater at Broadway and 39th St. before moving
to its permanent home at CBS-TV Studio 50 in New York City, later renamed
the Ed Sullivan Theater.
