“MR. OREGON” ~ GLENN JACKSON

Glenn L. Jackson was one of Oregon’s most influential
figures. He was a businessman who was appointed to
The Oregon State Highway Commission by Governor
Mark Hatfield in 1959. Jackson became chairman of
the commission in 1962. He died in 1980 at age 78.

The Glenn Jackson Memorial Bridge spans the Columbia
River and carries I-205 traffic between Portland, Oregon
and Vancouver, Washington. It opened in December of
1982.

PORTLAND’S ‘’HOOVERVILLE’’ ~ 1936

A shanty town built by homeless people during the
Depression. It was named after President Herbert
Hoover who many blamed for the Depression.

Prominent Portland businessman Bob Hazen (right)  was
among those in attendance for the final broadcast of KEX
radio personality Barney Keep (left) on February 14, 1979.
Keep was ending 35 years with the radio station.

THE BIRTH OF A CARTOON CHARACTER

The Warner Bros. animated character Tweety Bird
appeared for the first time on this date in 1942. The 
cartoon was,“A Tale of Two Kitties”. Portland’s own
Mel Blanc was Tweety’s voice untill 1989.
