CROSSING THE ENGLISH CHANNEL BY AIR

7 January 1785 | This Day in Aviation

Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John
Jeffries traveled from Dover, England, to Calais, France,
in a
gas balloon, becoming the first to cross the English
Channel by air.

The two men nearly crashed into the Channel along the
way, however, as their balloon was weighed down by
extraneous supplies such as anchors, a nonfunctional
hand-operated propeller, and silk-covered oars with
which they hoped they could row their way through the
air.

Just before reaching the French coast, the two balloonists
were forced to throw nearly everything out of the balloon,
and Blanchard even threw his trousers over the side in a
desperate, but apparently successful, attempt to lighten
the ship.

HISTORY WAS MADE ON THIS DAY IN 1789

First U S presidential election January 07 1789 This Day in History - YouTube

Congress set January 7, 1789 as the date by which states
are
required to choose electors for the country’s first-ever
presidential election. A month later, on February 4,
George
Washington
was elected president by state electors and
sworn into office on April 30, 1789.

As it did in 1789, the United States still uses the Electoral
College
system, which today gives all American citizens
over the age of 18 the right to vote for electors, who in
turn vote for the president.

The president and vice president are the only elected
federal officials chosen by the Electoral College instead
of by direct popular vote.

ALIEN-LIKE FIGURINE RAISES QUESTIONS

Figurine of alien

(FOX NEWS) – A strange alien-like clay head dating back
thousands of years has been retrieved from an excavation
in Kuwait, stumping archaeologists about how it came to
be.

In a Nov. 28 press release published by the University of
Warsaw, the school explained that researchers from the
Kuwaiti-Polish Archaeological Mission found the artifact
in Bahra 1, an archaeological site in the Subiya region of
Kuwait.

The press release called the artifact "one of the most
remarkable" discoveries of the excavation.

The figurine dates back to the Ubaid period of ancient
Mesopotamia, which predated the Bronze Age.

Archaeologists estimate that the artifact was crafted
during the 6th millennium BCE, making it between 7,000
and 8,000 years old.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (KATU) — The Oregon City Police Department
is mourning the loss of its first narcotics detection dog, K9 Grendel,
who passed away after a sudden diagnosis of cancer.

K9 Grendel was taken to an emergency veterinarian, where it was determined he was suffering from internal bleeding due to cancer.

After consulting with the doctor and considering all options, the
difficult decision was made to put him down.

K9 Grendel joined the department nine years ago and was partnered
with Officer Pohl. He quickly became a beloved member of the department and was known for his dedication to the Oregon City community.

Over the years, K9 Grendel and Officer Pohl formed an exceptional
team, playing a crucial role in locating dangerous drugs, including significant amounts of fentanyl. Their efforts were instrumental in removing numerous drug dealers from the streets, contributing to
the safety of Oregon City and the surrounding metro area.
