FIRST MASTERS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP ON THIS DATE IN 1934

The first “Augusta National Invitation” Tournament, as the Masters was originally known, was won by Horton Smith of Detroit, Mich. (below). The present name was adopted in 1939. The first tournament was played with current holes 10 through 18 played as the first nine, and 1 through 9 as the second nine, then reversed permanently to its present layout for the 1935 tournament. Smith received a total of $1,500 in prize money.

Reese Witherspoon landed her first feature role as the female lead in the film
The Man in the Moon in 1991; later that year she made her television debut, in
in the cable movie Wildflower. Witherspoon appeared in the critically acclaimed
Election (1999), which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She was in the
box office hit Legally Blonde in 2001. In 2005, Witherspoon received worldwide
attention and praise for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Walk the Line,
which earned her an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen
Actors Guild Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

William  Shatner became a cultural icon for his portrayal of James T. Kirk, captain of  
the Star Ship Enterprise, in the Sci-Fi television series Star Trek from 1966 to 1969,
Star Trek: The Animated Series from 1973 to 1974, and in seven of the subsequent
star Trek feature films from 1979 to 1994. Shatner also played the veteran police sergeant in T.J. Hooker from 1982 to 1986. He has since worked as a musician,
author, producer, director, and celebrity pitchman. He has won two Emmy Awards
and a Golden Globe Award.
