WILLIAM HOLDEN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1918

      William Holden
(April 17, 1918 – November 12, 1981)
 

Holden won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1954 and the Emmy
Award
for Best Actor in 1974. He is one of the most popular and well
known movie stars of all time, Holden was one of the biggest box office
draws of the 1950s, he was named one of the "Top 10 Stars of the
Year" six times (1954–1958, 1961) and appeared on the American
Film Institute
‘s 100 Years…100 Stars list as number 25. He starred
in some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of all time,
including such blockbusters as The Bridge on the River Kwai
(1957),
The Wild Bunch
(1969), The Towering Inferno (1974), and Network
(1976).

GIANT PANDAS ARRIVED ON THIS DAY IN 1972

Two Giant Pandas were given to the United States as gifts by the government of
China following President Richard Nixon‘s visit in 1972. In return, the U.S. sent 
China a pair of musk oxen.The Pandas arrived at the National Zoo in Washington,
D.C.
at a ceremony attended by
First Lady Pat Nixon. During their time at the Zoo,
the pair had five cubs, but none of them survived past a few days.

Ling-Ling died suddenly from heart failure in December 1992, at which time she was
the longest-lived giant panda in captivity outside China. Hsing-Hsing would go on to
pass her record when he was euthanized by zookeepers in November 1999 at the
age of 28 due to painful kidney failure.

HE BECAME A NEWS ICON ON THIS DAY IN 1962

On April 16, 1962, Walter Cronkite succeeded Douglas Edwards as anchorman of the CBS Evening News (initially Walter Cronkite with the News). The program expanded
from 15 to 30 minutes on September 2, 1963, making Cronkite the anchor of network 
television’s first nightly half-hour news program.
