EXPEDITION BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1804

LewisClarkVignette

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806), was the first transcontinental
expedition to the
Pacific coast undertaken by the United States. Commissioned
by President
Thomas Jefferson, it was led by two Virginia-born veterans of Indian
wars
in the Ohio Valley, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Their objectives were
both scientific and commercial, to study the area’s plants, animal life, and geography,
and to learn how the region could be exploited economically.

Jamestown was a settlement in the Colony of Virginia that was established by the
Virginia Company of London as "James Fort", named for King James I of England. It
was the first permanent
English settlement in what is now the United States, following several earlier failed attempts, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke. It would serve
as capital of the colony for 83 years (from 1616 until 1699).
