REMEMBER THE SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE?

The ABC Sunday Night Movie presented theatrical feature films airing on
TV for the first time. The feature films were edited for content, to remove
objectionable material, It was famous in the late 1970s for its theme music
and brightly colored marquee. For many years, until the early 1980s, the
announcer for all of ABC’s movie shows was network staff announcer Joel
Crager
(below).

SECOND MERCURY FLIGHT ON THIS DAY IN 1961

Astronaut Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom just before he climbed into his spacecraft

Grissom was the second American to go into space, following Alan Shepard’s
suborbital flight. His flight on the "Liberty Bell 7" spacecraft, which lasted 15
minutes and 37 seconds, was successful with the exception of the hatch
which blew prematurely after landing, causing the spacecraft to sink in the
Atlantic Ocean. Liberty Bell 7 was recovered from 3 miles deep in 1999, 38
years to the day after his lift-off.
