MOST PLAYED RECORD ON THIS DAY IN 1958
"Sugartime" is one of The McGuire Sisters most popular songs. It sold more
than one million copies.
The sisters retired from public appearances In 1968. Their last performance that
year was on the Ed Sullivan Show. Phyllis McGuire continued to perform solo for
a time. The McGuire Sisters have made occasional appearances together.
In 2001, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Hit Parade
Hall of Fame in 2009. The sisters opened a restaurant in Bradenton, Florida
called McGuire’s Pub.
RECORDED ON THIS DAY IN1937
"Sweet Leilani" was featured in the 1937 film, Waikiki Wedding. It
won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and Bing Crosby’s
record became one of the biggest hits of the year.
Harry Owens wrote the song on October 20, 1934 for his daughter
Leilani, who was born the previous day. Leilani is a popular
Hawaiian name, meaning "heavenly garland of flowers".
THE BEST PICTURE WINNER FOR 1945!
The film’s musical score was among the first to feature the eerie sounds of the
theremin, an early electronic musical instrument named after its Russian inventor, Professor Leon Theremin. It was used to create the feelings of alcoholism in this
story about an alcoholic.
