A household radio favorite for millions of depression era housewives was the drama
series “The Guiding Light”. NBC radio presented the first broadcast of the longest-
running story line in daytime drama. The show moved to CBS Radio in 1947 and
began a long run on CBS-TV in 1952 that ended in 2009 due to poor ratings. The
original radio program of 15 minute episodes was sponsored by Procter & Gamble.
LAST TONIGHT SHOW ON THIS DAY IN 1957
Tonight Starring Steve Allen was the first version of what eventually
became known as The Tonight Show. Tonight was the first late-night
talk show, as well as the first late night television series of any time
to achieve long-term success. Allen’s run as host of the show began
on September 27, 1954 and ended with his dismissal. The last show
aired on January 25, 1957.
