Robert “Red” Robinson at the mic in the KGW radio broadcast booth, 1959
Before coming to Portland, Oregon in 1959, Red Robinson was the first DJ to play
rock ’n’ roll music on a regular basis in Canada where he interviewed such stars as
Buddy Holly And Elvis Presley. Red held down the 2-6pm slot on radio 62 KGW
and was also the host of Portland Bandstand, a KGW-TV teen music and dance
show on Saturdays. After a hitch in the US Army, Red returned to Canadian radio
in 1961 and retired from full time air work in 2001. He continues to host a Sunday
radio show.
Red Robinson was elected into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, along
with the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Rockabilly Hall of
Fame in 2000.
