SEA ADVENTURE DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1958

Lloyd Bridges

Sea Hunt was a syndicated television adventure series that premiered on
Saturday, January 4, 1958 and ran till September 3, 1961. It starred Lloyd
Bridges as ex-Navy frogman Mike Nelson. The series served as a spring
board for some of Hollywood’s most famous actors, including Leonard
Nimoy, Robert Conrad, Bruce Dern, Larry Hagman, and Jack Nicholson
who appeared in the last episode of the series (below). Bridges’ own sons,
Beau and Jeff also appeared on the show.

DISNEY FILM RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1954

The movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a 1954 adventure film starring Kirk
Douglas and James Mason. It was the first science fiction film produced by Walt
Disney Productions, as well as the only science-fiction produced by Walt Disney
himself. It was also the first feature length Disney film to be distributed by Buena
Vista Distribution. It is the best-known adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. The
film won two Academy Awards and was nominated for one more.

SOUTH POLE REACHED ON THIS DAY IN 1911

Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who led the first Antarctic
expedition to the South Pole, reaching it on December 14, 1911. He
originally set out for the South Pole on September 8, 1911, but had to
abandoned the journey due to extreme temperatures.
