Sir Elton Hercules John (Reginald Kenneth Dwight) is a British
singer, songwriter and pianist. His music and showmanship
have had a significant, lasting impact on the music industry,
and his songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin is
one of the most successful in history. John was the 19th
EGOT winner in history. He has sold over 300 million records
worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists
of all time. Elton John is 78 years old today.

On March 25, 1958, Sugar Ray Robinson defeated Carmen Basilio
to regain the middleweight championship. It was the fifth and final
title of his career.

Robinson is considered by many to be the greatest prizefighter
in history.

No less an authority than heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali 
said, “My idol will always be Sugar Ray Robinson, who was, and
remains, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters to have ever
lived in this century.”

On March 24, 1972, – The Godfather – a three-hour epic chronicling
the lives of the Corleones, an Italian-American crime family led by
the powerful Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando)—was released in
theaters nationwide.

The Godfather is regarded as one of the greatest and most
influential films ever made, as well as a landmark of the
gangster genre.

March 24, 1989: One of the worst oil spills in U.S. history began
when the supertanker Exxon Valdez, owned and operated by the
Exxon Corporation, runs aground on a reef in Prince William
Sound in southern Alaska.

Hundreds of thousands of birds and animals were adversely
affected by the environmental disaster.

It was later revealed that Joseph Hazelwood, the captain of the
Valdez, was drinking at the time of the accident and allowed an uncertified officer to steer the massive vessel.
