TROOPS ORDERED TO SOUTH KOREA IN 1950

OTD in History… June 27, 1950, President Truman orders American troops to fight in the Korean War

On June 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman announced he is
ordering U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the
democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist
North Korea.

The United States was undertaking the major military operation,
he explained, to enforce a United Nations resolution calling for
an end to hostilities, and to stem the spread of communism in
Asia.

In addition to ordering U.S. forces to Korea, Truman also
deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa (Taiwan) to guard
against invasion by communist China and ordered an
acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting
communist guerrillas in Vietnam.

How The Stories Of Wrigley's Chewing Gum & Barcodes Intertwined

On the morning of June 26, 1974, at a supermarket in Troy, Ohio,
a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum became the first
grocery item scanned with a Universal Product Code, or UPC.

The result of years of scientific experimentation and industry cooperation, the UPC barcode would go on to be used well
beyond the grocery checkout counter, becoming a ubiquitous
feature of modern commerce, with
billions of barcodes scanned
daily
