The Death of Dale Earnhardt : r/IconicImages

On February 18, 2001, Dale Earnhardt Sr., considered one of the
greatest drivers in National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) history,
died at the age of 49 in a last-lap crash at the
43rd Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach,
Florida.

Earnhardt was driving his famous black No. 3 Chevrolet and vying
for third place when he collided with another car, then crashed into
a wall. After being cut from his car, Earnhardt, whose tough,
aggressive driving style earned him the nickname “The Intimidator,”
was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Earnhardt died of a basilar skull ring fracture, the most serious
type of skull fracture.

Yarbrough won in a back-up Ford car after crashing his

LAND-SPEED RECORD SET ON THIS DAY IN 1904

January 12, 1904: Henry Ford sets speed record - Henry Ford sets a land-speed record of 91.37 ...

On January 12, 1904, Henry Ford set a land-speed record of 91.37
mph on the frozen surface of Michigan’s Lake St. Clair. He was
driving a four-wheel vehicle, dubbed the “999,” with a wooden
chassis but no body or hood. Ford’s record was broken within
a month at Ormond Beach, Florida, by a driver named William K. Vanderbilt; even so, the publicity surrounding Ford’s achievement
was valuable to the auto pioneer, who in June of the previous year
had incorporated the Ford Motor Company, which would eventually
go on to become one of America’s Big Three automakers.

At 5:45 PM on September 30, 1955, 24-year-old actor James
Dean was killed in Cholame, California, when the Porsche
he is driving hits a Ford Tudor sedan at an intersection.

The driver of the other car, 23-year-old California Polytechnic
State University student Donald Turnupseed, was dazed but
mostly uninjured; Dean’s passenger, German mechanic Rolf
Wütherich was badly injured but survived.

Only one of Dean’s movies, “East of Eden,” had been released
at the time of his death (“Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant”
opened shortly afterward), but he was already on his way to superstardom—and the crash made him a legend.

James Dean loved racing cars, and in fact he and his brand-
new, $7000 Porsche Spyder convertible were on their way
to a race in Salinas, 90 miles south of San Francisco.
