FIRST GRAMMY AWARDS ON THIS DAY IN 1959

The inaugural Grammy Awards were held on May 4, 1959 at the Beverly
Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. They recognized musical accomplishments
by performers for the year 1958.
Domenico Modugno, Henry Mancini,
Ella Fitzgerald and Ross Bagdasarian, Sr.(David Seville) each won 2
awards. Ella Fitzgerald and bandleader Count Basie become the first
African Americans to win Grammy Awards. Comedian Mort Sahl hosted
the event.

POPULAR SINGER BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1903

       Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby (May 3, 1903 – October 14, 1977)

Bing Crosby was one of the best-selling recording artists of the 20th century, 
with over half a billion records in circulation. He won an
Academy Award for
Best Actor
for his role as Father Chuck O’Malley in the 1944 motion picture
Going My Way
, and was nominated for his reprise of the role in The Bells of
St. Mary’s
the next year, becoming the first of four actors to be nominated
twice for playing the same character. In 1963, Crosby received the first
Grammy Global Achievement Award.

Although currently retired,radio personality Casey Kasem is still
heard on reruns of the weekly syndicated radio programs based
on the American Top 40 franchise. He does some voice acting
and commercials.
In 1985, Kasem was inducted into the National
Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame
radio division.
