Roger Eugene Maris (September 10, 1934 – December 14, 1985)

Maris was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1983. In response, Maris
organized the annual Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament to raise money for
cancer research and treatment. He died at age 51 on December 14, 1985 at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas.

completely alone, floating in an
inner tube. He was rescued on this day in 1999.

The boat that Elian and his mother, and 10 other people had been traveling on to the United States from Cuba had been ripped apart
in the rough seas, and he was one of the only survivors.

Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 63 Americans hostage (90 total hostages) on this day in 1979. The
militants, mostly students, demanded that the U.S. send the
former shah back to Iran to stand trial. Many hostages were
later released, but 52 were held for the next 14 months.
