The recording session for "The Letter” was held at American Sound
Studio In Memphis. It began at 10 o’clock on a Saturday morning and
took over thirty takes wrapping at either three or five o’clock that

RECORD RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1958

The song "To Know Him Is to Love Him" was written by Phil Spector, inspired
by words on his father’s tombstone, "To Know Him Was To Love Him." It was
first recorded by the only vocal group of which he was a member, the Teddy
Bears
. Their recording spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100
singles chart in 1958.

was Cooke’s debut single and was a huge success, becoming a number- 
one hit on both Billboard‘s Rhythm & Blues Records chart and the Billboard

. The song was named as one of the 500 most important rock and
roll
recordings by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
. In April 2010, the song
ranked #115 in Rolling Stone magazine’s The 500 Greatest Songs of All
Time
.
