MUSICAL PRODUCTION PREMIERED IN 1959

Original Broadway Cast - The Sound of Music

Starring Mary Martin as Maria and Theodore Bikel as Captain
von Trapp, the original Broadway production of The Sound
of Music
premiered at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on November
16, 1959, where it won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical
and Best Leading Actress. It later moved to the Mark Hellinger,
where it would end its lauded run on June 15, 1963 after 1,443 performances.

On April 7, 1949, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South
Pacific
opened at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway in New
York City. The romantic musical about World War II, which
touches on controversial racial themes, went on to run for
almost five years, becoming one of the most popular musicals
of the 1950s.

The show won 10 Tony Awards, and six decades later, its
Lincoln Center revival would earn another seven, making
it the most Tony Award-winning show in New York theater
history.
