BUSINESSMAN BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1902
Raymond Albert "Ray" Kroc (October 5, 1902 – January 14, 1984)
Businessman Ray Kroc joined McDonald’s in 1954 and turned it into the
world’s dominant fast-food chain after buying the business for $2.7 million
in 1961.
Kroc was included in Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century,
and amassed a fortune during his lifetime. He owned the San Diego Padres
baseball team from 1974 until his death in 1984.

Zimmerman’s 12-Mile Store was located at 223rd and SE Stark Street.
The 12 mile store opened in 1938 by Carl Zimmerman as a small gas station
and grocery store (top photo). The store soon expanded to 30,000 square
feet with a butcher department, pharmacy and a post office. The building
was demolished in 2005 and replaced with Weston Kia (below).

THIS WAS JACK IN THE BOX IN THE 1960s
The fast-food restaurant Jack in the Box was founded in 1951 by Robert
O. Peterson in San Diego,California, where it is still headquartered today.
In total, the chain has 2,200 locations, primarily serving the West Coast
of the U.S.
