In 1840, the J.B. Williams Company in Glastonbury,
Connecticut, manufactured soap under the name
Ivorine. Williams decided to focus on its shaving
soap and sold Ivorine to Procter & Gamble, which
later developed Ivory.

1800s

This celebration of one of the most iconic and delicious foods has
been taking place every year since the early part of the Roaring 20s.

The story goes that a teenager, Lionel Sternberger, who was working
in his father’s sandwich shop, The Rite Spot in Pasadena, California, 
just decided to put a slice of American cheese on a burger one day        
and found it to be tasty so he shared the idea with his dad who
liked it too. And, thus, the cheeseburger was born.

Although the idea was thought to be created in California in 1924,
the first actual sandwich to be marketed that was first called the
“cheeseburger” was at Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky
in 1934. But the following year, in 1935, the term “cheeseburger”
was actually trademarked in another place, at the Humpty Dumpty
Drive-in in Denver, Colorado. It seems that people all over the U.S. 
have taken credit for the invention of the cheeseburger!
   

Pontiac was named after the famous Ottawa chief (below),
who had also given his name to the city of Pontiac,
Michigan, where the car was produced.

                   launched in 1926 and featured 
                   the native American chief.

On September 2, 1969, America’s first automatic teller
machine (ATM) makes its public debut, dispensing
cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville
Centre, New York. ATMs went on to revolutionize the
banking industry, eliminating the need to visit a bank
to conduct basic financial transactions.  

By the 1980s, these money machines had become
widely popular and handled many of the functions
previously performed by human tellers, such as
check deposits and  money transfers between
accounts. 

Today, ATMs are as indispensable to most people
as cell phones and e-mail.

Donald C. Wetzel (93) is an American businessman known
for holding the USA patent to the automatic teller machine.

Ransom Eli Olds (June 3, 1864 – August 26, 1950)

Olds of Lansing, Michigan was a pioneer of the American
automotive industry who founded Olds Motors Works—
which would later become Oldsmobile—on August 21, 1897.

 He claimed to have built his first steam car as early as 1887
and his first gasoline-powered car in 1896.

The modern assembly line and its basic concept is credited
to Olds, who used it to build the first mass-produced auto, 
the Oldsmobile Curved Dash, beginning in 1901.
