David Soul is a actor and singer, best known for his role as Detective Kenneth
"Hutch" Hutchinson in the ABC-TV show Starsky and Hutch (1975-1979). Soul
first gained attention as the "Covered Man" appearing on The Merv Griffin Show
(NBC) in 1966 & 1967, on which he sang while wearing a mask. He explained:
"My name is David Soul, and I want to be known for my music.” The same year,
he made his television debut in Flipper. In 1967 he signed a contract with
Columbia Pictures and following a number of guest appearances, including
one of the first episodes of Str Trek.

LENNON’S KILLER SENTENCED ON THIS DAY IN 1981

Mark David Chapman (pictured above in a recent mug shot) is the accused murderer
of former Beatle member John Lennon on December 8, 1980. The sentencing hearing
for Chapman took place on August 24, 1981. The judge ordered that Chapman should receive psychiatric treatment in prison and sentenced him to 20 years to life. Chapman
is currently imprisoned at the Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, New York. He has
been denied parole six times.

Actor Mike Connors has a long history of police and military roles and is 
best known for playing detective Joe Mannix in the CBS television series,
Mannix
(1967-1975). Before that, he had played a crime-fighting undercover
agent in another CBS series, Tightrope (1959-1960).

THE WATTS RIOTS BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1965

As the result of a buildup of previous racial tension due to a combination
of events, a large-scale riot which lasted 6 days occurred on August 11,
1965 in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. By the time
the riot subsided, 34 people had been killed, 1,032 injured, and 3,438
arrested. Overall, an estimated $40 million in damage was caused as
almost 1,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. It would stand as
the most severe riot in Los Angeles history until the Los Angeles riots
of 1992.

SERIAL KILLER CAPTURED ON THIS DATE IN 1977

David Richard Berkowitz (born Richard David Falco; June 1, 1953), also
known as Son of Sam and the .44 Caliber Killer, is a serial killer and arsonist
who terrorized New York City from July 1976 until his arrest on August 10,
1977. Berkowitz confessed to killing six people and wounding several others
in the course of  eight shootings in New York. His first words upon arrest were
reported to be, “You got me. What took you so long?” On June 12, 1978, he
was sentenced to 25 years-to-life in prison for the murders, making his
maximum term 365 years. He was first imprisoned at the Attica Correctional
and is currently being held at Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg,
New York.
