BELOVED HARBOR SEAL HAS PASSED AWAY

Seattle Aquarium mourns loss of beloved 39-year-old harbor seal Barney

(KOMO NEWS) – The Seattle Aquarium is grieving the loss of
Barney, a cherished 39-year-old harbor seal who passed away
today.

Barney, who was the equivalent of a 100-year-old human, was
one of the oldest known harbor seals in human care.

Dr. Caitlin Hadfield, Director of Animal Health, and the veterinary
and animal care teams had been closely monitoring Barney’s
health for years, ensuring his comfort and happiness.

Despite developing age-related health issues, Barney had been
doing well until a recent acute decline prompted the difficult
decision to humanely euthanize him.

Farewell to Barney - Seattle Aquarium

Barney was the first harbor seal to be born here at the Aquarium back in 1985. Over his long life, he was cherished by his caretakers for his easygoing and inquisitive nature.

LEBANON, Ore. (KATU) — On Feb. 6, 2025, a group of Safeway employees in Lebanon demonstrated heroism when a co-worker
suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the store’s break room.

Mary Stratton, John Escalera, Brandy Davis, and Tammy Vanepps-
Fox acted in time, performing CPR and using an Automated
External Defibrillator to administer two shocks before emergency responders arrived.

Their prompt actions were crucial in giving the patient a fighting
chance at survival.

Upon arrival, Lebanon Fire District crews continued treatment,
applying two additional shocks and achieving Return of
Spontaneous Circulation before stabilizing the patient was
transported to the hospital and discharged several days later.

The lifesaving efforts of Stratton, Escalera, Davis, and Vanepps-
Fox were recognized at the Lebanon Fire District’s Board Meeting
on March 11, 2025.

LFD also expressed gratitude to its crew members for their
professional response.
The Fire District encourages the
community to stay prepared by learning CPR and AED
skills, which can be life-saving.
