The television panel show To Tell the Truth was created by Bob Stewart
and produced by Goodson-Todman Productions. Bud Collyer was the
show’s host. Recurring panelists by the 1960s included Tom Poston
,
Peggy Cass, Orson Bean, and Kitty Carlisle. Earlier regular panelists
had included Johnny Carson
, Polly Bergen, and Jayne Meadows.

SINGLE RELEASED ON THE DAY IN 1968

The song "Crimson and Clover" spent 16 weeks on the U.S. charts, reaching number one here and other countries. The single has sold
5 million copies, making it Tommy James and the Shondells’ best-
selling song. In 2006,
Pitchfork Media named it the 57th best song
of the 1960s.


Tommy James (Thomas Gregory Jackson) turned
68 in April.

RECORD RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1967

The song "Green Tambourine" was the primary hit by the 1960s Ohiobased
rock group The Lemon Pipers. It has been credited as being one of the first
bubblegum pop chart-toppers. Released towards the end of 1967, it peaked
at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week at the beginning of
February, 1968 and earned the group a gold record for over a million
copies sold. The record remained on the chart for three months, the first
U.S. number-one hit for the Buddah label
.

TV SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1951

After a successful run on radio, Dragnet became popular enough to move to
NBC television where it debuted as a special preview on "Chesterfield Sound
Off Time". The show began officially on January 3, 1952 and aired until August
23, 1959.
