THE HOT 100 DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1958

The Billboard Hot 100 is the music industry standard singles popularity chart
issued weekly by Billboard magazine. The first number-one song of the Hot
100 was "Poor Little Fool" by Ricky Nelson on August 4, 1958. As of the
current issue for the week ending August 10, 2013, the Hot 100 has had
1,027 different number-one hits.

Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts (also known as Talent Scouts) was a television 
variety show which premiered December 6, 1948 ran on CBS until January 1, 
1958.  Sponsored by Lipton Tea, According to the Nielsen ratings, it was the
highest rated television show for the 1951–1952 season.

On December 24, 1956, Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts became the first TV 
entertainment program to be videotaped for broadcast using the technology
of the new .Ampex quadruplex videotape machine (below).

‘’GENTLEMAN JIM’’ DIED ON THIS DAY IN 1964

     James Travis "Jim" Reeves
(August 20, 1923 – July 31, 1964)

Reeves songs continued to chart for years after his death. Reeves died
at age 40 in the crash of a private airplane. He is a member of both the
Country Music and Texas Country Music Halls of Fame.
