The Code of Practices for Television Broadcasters, also known as the Television
Code, was a set of ethical standards adopted by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) for television. The code was established on December 6,
1951. Compliance with the code was indicated by the "Seal of Good Practice",
displayed during closing credits on most US television programs, and on some
TV station sign-on and sign-offs from 1952 through the early 1980s.

The code prohibited the use of profanity, the negative portrayal of family life,
irreverence for God and religion, illicit sex, drunkenness addiction, also the
presentation of cruelty, detailed techniques of crime, the use of and for its
own sake, and the negative portrayal of law enforcement officials, among
others.

The code regulated how performers should dress and move to be within the
"bounds of decency". Further, news reporting was to be "factual, fair and
without bias" and commentary and analysis should be "clearly defined as
such". Broadcasters were to make time available for religious broadcasting
and were discouraged from charging religious bodies for access. Most
importantly, it limited the commercial minutes per hour.

In the wake of a settlement with the Justice Department, the television code
was suspended in 1983.

The first observance of a "Father’s Day" was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont,
West Virginia, in the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now
known as Central United Methodist Church.

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in
1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s
Day celebration^.and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that
it would become commercialized. President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924
that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.

Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by 
Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal
accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers,
thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents".

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation
honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years
later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard
Nixon signed it into law in 1972 (below).

Les Paul (Lester William Polsfuss) (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009)

Iconic Jazz and blues guitarist Les Paul pioneered the solid-body electric guitar, 
influencing what would become rock ‘n’ roll music. On November 23, 2011, Paul
was ranked at #18 on Rolling Stone‘s "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".That
same year, Paul was added to the Nashville Walk of Fame.

In January 1948, Les Paul shattered his right arm and elbow in a near-fatal
auto accident. Doctors at Oklahoma City’s Wesley Presbyterian Hospital told
Paul they could not rebuild his elbow. Their other option was amputation. He 
was flown to Los Angeles, where his arm was set at an angle—just under 90
degrees—that allowed him to cradle and pick the guitar. It took him nearly a
year and a half to recover.
