Duct tape is born when Vesta Stoudt (1891 – 1966) a
factory worker packing WWII munitions, writes FDR
outlining—with drawings—her idea to replace weak
paper packing tape with a tougher waterproof cloth
version. Impressed, FDR pushed her idea into
production.

WHEN DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGAN
Congress pushed ahead standard time for the United States by
one hour in each time zone, imposing daylight saving time—
called at the time “war time.”
Daylight saving time, suggested by President Roosevelt, was
imposed to conserve fuel and could be traced back to World
War I, when Congress imposed one standard time on the
United States to enable the country to better utilize resources,
following the European model.
The 1918 Standard Time Act was meant to be in effect for only
seven months of the year—and was discontinued nationally
after the war.

FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO WALK IN SPACE
Former NASA astronaut Dr.Bernard Harris (69) became the first
Black man to walk in space.
His mission contributes to a burgeoning collaboration between
the United States and Russia in space exploration.
Bernard Harris stepped out of the space shuttle Discovery in
orbit on February 9, 1995.
He first embarked on the unlikely journey toward his historic
spacewalk as a child, inspired by stargazing in his home state
of Texas.
Harris described his determination to become an astronaut as
a "big leap of faith" at a time when the Apollo 11 moon landing
shared headlines with the struggle for civil rights. "The main
challenge was the color of my skin."
