Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, one of the best-
selling novels of all time and the basis for a blockbuster
1939 movie, was published on June 30, 1936.

In 1926, Mitchell was forced to quit her job as a reporter
at the Atlanta Journal to recover from a series of physical
injuries. With too much time on her hands, Mitchell soon
grew restless. Working on a Remington typewriter, a gift
from her second husband, John R. Marsh, in their cramped 
one-bedroom apartment, Mitchell began telling the story
of an Atlanta belle named Pansy O’Hara.

Judy Garland was an award winning actress,
singer, dancer and vaudevillian. While critically
acclaimed for many different roles throughout
her career, she is widely known for playing the
part of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939).

On June 29, 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docked
with the Russian space station Mir to form the largest man-
made satellite ever to orbit the Earth.

This historic moment of cooperation between former rival
space programs was also the 100th human space mission
in American history.

Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994)

On June 28, 1972, President Nixon (above) announced that no
more draftees will be sent to Vietnam unless they volunteer
for such duty. He also announced that a force of 10,000 troops
would be withdrawn by September 1, which would leave a
total of 39,000 in Vietnam.

The New York Times has reported, Hollywood star Ryan
Seacrest will replace Pat Sajak as the new host of the
iconic game show, “Wheel of Fortune.”
 

Seacrest’s new role was announced just two weeks after
Sajak (below) announced his retirement from the game
show after hosting the program for over 40 years.
