Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal
holiday
in the United States
for mourning the U.S. military
personnel who have died while serving in the
United States
armed forces
. It is observed on the last Monday of May. It was
formerly observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.

We thank God for them and strive to love more like them.

The modern holiday was first celebrated in 1907, when Anna Jarvis
held the first Mother’s Day
service of worship at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.] Andrew’s Methodist
Church now holds the
International Mother’s Day Shrine. Her
campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the
United States began in 1905, the year her mother,
Ann Reeves
Jarvis
, died.

Spanish for "Fifth of May") a yearly celebration
held on May 5, which commemorates the anniversary of
Mexico’s
victory over the
French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 led
by General
Ignacio Zaragoza (below).
