FILM RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1940

The animated film Fantasia was produced by Walt Disney and released by Walt 
Disney Productions. It is the third feature in the Disney animated features library
and consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music with
conductor Leopold Stokowski, seven of which are performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Fantasia is the first commercial film shown in stereophonic sound. In
1998 the American Film Institute ranked it as the 58th greatest American film 
in their 100 Years…100 Movies and the fifth greatest animated film in their
10 Top 10 list.

MAUREEN O’HARA HAS DIED AT 95

Maureen O’Hara (born Maureen FitzSimons in Ireland)
(August 17, 1920 – October 24, 2015)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) –  Maureen O’Hara, the flame-haired Irish movie
star who appeared in classics ranging from the grim "How Green Was My
Valley" (1941) to the uplifting "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947) and bantered
unforgettably with John Wayne in several films has passed.

According to her longtime manager, Johnny Nicoletti, O’Hara died in her sleep
at her home in Boise, Idaho.

She played the resourceful action hero Ellen Ripley in Alien (1979),
Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997). She
also played Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters (1994) and Ghostbusters
II
(1987) and Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009).

ACTRESS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1908


Carole Lombard (born Jane Alice Peters in Fort Wayne, Indiana) 
(October 6, 1908 – January 16, 1942)

Lombard starred with Clark Gable in 1932’s No Man of Her Own and played
the lead role in the 1942 film To Be or Not to Be. She made her film debut at
age twelve in The Perfect Crime (1921). The career of Carole Lombard ended
at age 33 when she died in an airplane crash on Mount Potosi, Nevada while
returning from a War Bond tour.
