DIRECTOR MEL STUART IS DEAD AT 83

(AP) – Mel Stuart, an award-winning documentarian who also directed "Willy
Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," has died.

His daughter, Madeline Stuart, said he died Thursday night of cancer at his
home in Los Angeles.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Stuart was associated with David L. Wolper,
with whom he established a base of West Coast documentary production
at a time when New York filmmakers and TV networks’ news divisions
dominated the field.

Stuart’s documentaries during those years include "The Making of the
President 1960," for which he won an Emmy, as well as subsequent
explorations of the campaigns in 1964 and 1968. Other programs
were "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" and the Oscar-nominated
"Four Days in November."

Samuel Pack "Sam" Elliott was born in Sacramento, California and moved
to Oregon with his family during his teenage years, where he graduated
from David Douglas High School in Portland. He then attended Clark
College
in Vancouver, Washington, After a two-year program, Elliott
went to Hollywood where he worked in construction while studying acting.

Elliott began his career as a character actor in Westerns. One of his first
film roles was as ‘Card Player #2’ in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
(1969).

star. She set multiple national and regional swimming records in her a 
series of films in the 1940s and early 1950s known as "aquamusicals",
which featured elaborate performances with synchronized swimming
and diving.

Calhoun was an television and film actor, screenwriter and producer,
best known for his roles in Westerns.

 

The Texan is a Western television series which aired on the CBS
television network from 1958 to 1960. Calhoun plays Bill Longley,
a Confederate
captain from the Civil War, who roams the west
helping people in need.
