Ethel Barrymore was a member of the famous Barrymore family of actors. She
was the sister of actors John Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, and the great-
aunt of actress Drew Barrymore. Ethel Barrymore was a highly regarded stage
actress in New York City and a major Broadway performer. Many today consider
her to be the greatest actress of her generation.

    Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (13 August 1899 – 29 April 1980)

Hitchcock was a British film director and producer who was a pioneer in
the suspense and psychological thriller genres. Hitchcock moved to
Hollywood at the end of the 1930s when David O. Selznick signed him
to a seven-year contract. Alfred Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature
films in a career spanning six decades.The magazine Movie Maker has
described him as the most influential filmmaker of all-time, one of cinema’s   
most significant artists.

WALT DISNEY MOVIE OPENED ON THIS DATE IN 1942

The animated film Bambi was produced by Walt Disney and ws based on the book Bambie, A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten of Austria. The film was released by
RKO Radio Pictures and opened at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on
August 13, 1942. It is the fifth film in the Disney Animated Classics Series. In June
2008, the American Film Institute presented its “10 Top 10” list of the best ten films
in each of ten “classic” American film genres. After the polling was completed, Bambi
placed third in animation.

‘’WIZARD OF OZ’’ PREMIERED ON THIS DAY IN 1939

The Wizard of Oz first premiered at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin
on August 12, 1939 and opened nationally on August 25, 1939. The film grossed approximately $3 million in its initial release which was not considered that much a
profit by MGM. The Wizard of Oz received positive reviews and won two Academy Awards, and was nominated for Best Picture of the Year (losing to Gone with the
Wind
). The film was MGM’s most expensive production up to that time.

peak of her popularity in the 1950s. Some of her most successful films
include: Reign of Terror (1949), Three Little Words (1950), Woman’s
World
(1954), Slightly Scarlet (1956), and Journey to the Center of the
Earth
(1959). In 1953, Dahl hosted The Pepsi-Cola Playhouse, a
dramatic anthology series on ABC-TV. She is the mother of actor
Lorenzo Lamas.
